Trackable QR Codes

A trackable QR code records data every time someone scans it — location, device, timestamp, and more. Unlike static QR codes that simply redirect without any feedback, trackable QR codes give you visibility into who is scanning, where, and when.

Every QR code you create with QRelix is trackable by default. There's no extra toggle to flip, no premium add-on, and no code snippet to embed. The moment you generate a QR code, scan tracking is live.

What Makes a QR Code Trackable

A standard (static) QR code is just an encoded URL or text — once printed, you have zero insight into whether anyone ever scans it. A trackable QR code sits behind a dynamic redirect layer that logs each scan before forwarding the user to the destination.

QRelix uses this redirect layer on every code, which means:

  • Scan count is recorded automatically
  • Geographic location (city, region, country) is captured from the scanner's IP
  • Device and OS (iPhone, Android, desktop) are identified from the user agent
  • Browser used to open the QR code is logged
  • Timestamp of each scan is stored with second-level precision

All of this data appears in your QRelix dashboard in real time — no Google Analytics integration required, no UTM parameter setup, and no third-party scripts on your landing page.

How to Create a Trackable QR Code

Because every QRelix code is trackable out of the box, creating one is the same as creating any QR code:

  1. Sign in to your QRelix dashboard
  2. Click Create New QR Code
  3. Select your type — URL, vCard, Wi-Fi, file download, or any of the 17 supported types
  4. Enter your content — paste a URL, upload a file, or fill in the fields
  5. Customize the design — add your logo, pick brand colors, choose a pattern
  6. Click Generate — your trackable QR code is live instantly

That's it. No separate "enable tracking" checkbox. No plan upgrade. Tracking is baked into the platform at every tier, including the free trial.

What You Can Track

Once your QR code is live and being scanned, your dashboard shows:

Real-Time Scan Metrics

  • Total scans and unique scans over any date range
  • Scan trend graphs showing daily, weekly, or monthly volume
  • Peak scan times to understand when your audience is most active

Geographic Data

  • Country and city breakdown of where scans originate
  • Heat map visualization showing scan density by region
  • Use this to validate that your campaign is reaching the intended market

Device & Technology

  • Operating system split — iOS vs. Android vs. desktop
  • Browser breakdown — Chrome, Safari, in-app browsers, etc.
  • Device category — mobile, tablet, or desktop

Campaign Attribution

  • Pair trackable QR codes with UTM parameters for full-funnel attribution in Google Analytics
  • Use unique slugs per campaign (e.g., qrelix.com/summer-sale) to isolate performance by channel
  • Combine with Round Robin URLs for built-in A/B testing

Static codes are fine for one-off personal use. For any business application — marketing, packaging, events, restaurants, real estate — trackable QR codes are non-negotiable because you need data to prove ROI.

Common Use Cases

Marketing Campaigns — Place trackable QR codes on flyers, posters, and direct mail. Measure which placements drive the most scans and optimize spend accordingly.

Product Packaging — Track engagement with product labels and inserts. See which products drive the most customer interaction post-purchase.

Business Cards — Replace static contact info with a trackable vCard QR code. Know when prospects scan your card and follow up at the right moment.

Restaurant Menus — Monitor table-level engagement with digital menus. Identify peak ordering times and popular menu sections.

Event Badges & Tickets — Track attendee check-ins and session participation in real time. Feed data back into your CRM for post-event follow-up.

Real Estate Listings — Put trackable codes on yard signs and brochures. Measure buyer interest by listing and neighborhood.

Best Practices for Trackable QR Codes

  1. Use descriptive names — Name each code by campaign, channel, and date (e.g., "Spring Mailer - Northeast - Apr 2026") so you can filter analytics easily.

  2. Add UTM parameters — Append ?utm_source=qr&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=spring-mailer to your destination URL for cross-platform attribution.

  3. Review analytics weekly — Don't set and forget. Weekly check-ins help you catch underperforming placements early and reallocate budget.

  4. Test before printing — Scan your code from multiple devices to confirm tracking is working and the destination loads correctly.

  5. Leverage scan caps and expiration — For time-sensitive campaigns, set an expiration date or scan limit so the code stops redirecting after the promotion ends. See Security & Access Controls.
