QR code not working? Here is why, and how to fix it

A printed QR code that suddenly fails is almost always one of four things. Find yours below, then rescue the destination into a QR code you control, so the next print run never breaks.

Common causes

Why QR codes stop working

  • The generator's trial or plan ended

Dynamic QR codes send every scan through the generator's link. If that account lapses, some services stop forwarding scans or show their own page instead of yours. The printed code is fine; the link behind it is switched off.

  • The page it opens is gone

A static QR code holds one web address forever. If that page moved, was renamed, or the domain expired, every printed copy now opens an error.

  • The print can't be read

Codes that are too small, low contrast, inverted, stretched, glossy, creased, or missing their quiet border often fail on some phones.

  • A setting is blocking it

A scan limit, expiration date, schedule, or location rule on a dynamic code can stop scans on purpose. Check the code's settings before anything else.

The fix

Rescue the destination and make it trackable

  1. Step 1 of 4

Find out what is inside the code

Upload a photo to the free QRelix QR code scanner, which reads the link inside without opening it and flags anything risky.

  2. Step 2 of 4

    Check the link

If the link is a generator's short link that no longer forwards, the account behind it lapsed. If it is your own address, check that the page still exists.

  3. Step 3 of 4

    Make a replacement you control

Mirrored QR creates a new trackable QR code that goes to the same destination, so nothing changes for the people who scan it.

  4. Step 4 of 4

Swap it in on your next print run

Every QRelix code is dynamic, so you can change where it points later without reprinting again.

What you get with a QRelix code

  • A dynamic code: change where it points anytime, no reprinting.
  • Scan analytics on every plan: time, device, and location of each scan.
  • Email alerts on the first scan and when scans spike or go quiet.
  • Clear terms: free codes work for their first 50 scans, then pause until you upgrade. Nothing is ever deleted.

Questions

QR code not working: FAQ

Can a printed QR code be fixed without reprinting?
Only if it is a dynamic code and you can still reach the account that manages it. A static code, or a dynamic code whose account is gone, has to be replaced. Mirrored QR makes the replacement go to the same place, and from then on you can edit it without reprinting.
Why did my QR code stop working after a free trial?
Some services make dynamic codes that only work while you pay. When the trial or plan ends, they stop forwarding scans. Before you print, check what happens to your codes if you stop paying.
Do QRelix QR codes stop working?
QRelix codes are never deleted. On the free plan each code works for its first 50 scans and then pauses, with a clear message, until you upgrade to Pro ($5.99 a month) for unlimited scans. Upgrading reactivates paused codes without reprinting.
Why does my QR code scan on one phone but not another?
Usually size, contrast, or a missing quiet border. Print the code at least 2 cm (0.8 in) across for close range, keep dark dots on a light background, and leave a margin around it.
How do I make sure this never happens again?
Use a dynamic QR code from a service whose terms you know, point it at a page you control, test a printed sample before the full run, and keep scan alerts on so you notice when scans stop.
