Dynamic QR Code on Receipts: Setup and What to Link

5 min read

A dynamic QR code on receipts is one QR image you add to your receipt footer once and then re-point from a dashboard whenever you like: a Google review link this month, a two-question survey next month, a loyalty signup after that. The printed code never changes, and every scan is counted, so you can see how many customers pick up their phone after they pay. You can create a dynamic QR code for your receipts on QRelix with no credit card. Each free code works for its first 50 scans, so a pilot fits the free plan and an always-on receipt code usually needs Pro ($5.99/month).

What a dynamic QR code on receipts is (and is not)

A static QR code has the destination baked into the pattern. To change where it goes, you have to make a new code and load it into every register again. A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect link instead. The redirect logs the scan, then forwards the customer to whatever destination you have set, and you can change that destination at any time without touching the receipt template.

That matters on receipts for three reasons:

  • No trips back into the POS. Swap a spring offer for a summer one from your dashboard, even across 12 locations.
  • A simpler pattern. Because the redirect link is short, the code has fewer, larger squares, which helps on narrow thermal paper.
  • Scan data. You see how many receipts get scanned, at what hours, and in which cities.

One thing to keep separate: some point-of-sale systems print a different QR code on every receipt, tied to that one transaction, for digital receipts or tax reporting. Those per-transaction codes are generated by the POS itself. This guide covers the other kind, a single marketing or service code that sits in the footer of every receipt you print.

What to link a receipt QR code to

A receipt reaches a customer who has just paid, so pick one job that makes sense in that moment:

  • Reviews. Send happy customers straight to your review form. The setup is in our guide to a Google review QR code.
  • A short survey. Two questions get answered. Ten do not.
  • Loyalty or email signup. Offer something for the next visit, such as a free coffee after five purchases.
  • Returns, warranty, or care instructions. Link to the policy page or upload the PDF as a file.
  • Reorder or menu. Restaurants and takeout counters can point to online ordering. More ideas are on the QR codes for restaurants and QR codes for retail pages.

Print one line of text above the code that says what the customer gets, for example "Scan to rate your visit. Takes 30 seconds." A bare code with no reason to scan gets ignored.

How to set up a dynamic QR code on receipts

Step 1: Create the code

In QRelix, choose the URL type, paste your destination, and name the code after where it will print, such as "Receipt, Main St, Register 1." If you have several locations, make one code per location so the scan counts stay separate. Both plans include unlimited dynamic codes.

Step 2: Keep the design plain

Most thermal receipt printers print one color at roughly 203 dots per inch, so fine detail is lost. Use black on white with the default square pattern, and skip the logo. Brand colors and a center logo work well on posters, but they make a small thermal print harder to read.

Step 3: Download a PNG and size it

QRelix exports PNG, SVG, and JPG. Receipt templates usually take an image file, so use the PNG unless your POS says otherwise. Print the code at least 2 cm by 2 cm (0.8 inches). On standard 80 mm paper, 2.5 to 3 cm is a comfortable size. Leave a clear white margin on all four sides. Sizing rules for other materials are in the printing guide.

Step 4: Add it to the receipt footer

Open the receipt settings in your POS, where the logo and footer message are configured, and add the image with your one-line call to action above it. Place it before any long legal text so it is not the part that gets torn off or folded under.

Step 5: Test on a real receipt

Print a receipt, scan it with an iPhone and an Android phone, and confirm that the scan shows up in your QRelix dashboard. If the code looks gray or patchy, raise the print darkness on the printer before you blame the code.

What receipt scans tell you

Every QRelix code includes the analytics dashboard: total and unique scans, time of scan, city and country, and device type. For a receipt code, the useful number is scan rate, which is scans divided by receipts printed.

A worked example: a cafe prints 180 receipts a day and sees 4 scans a day, a 2.2% scan rate. The owner changes the line above the code from "Leave us a review" to "Scan for a free pastry on your 5th visit" and scans rise to 9 a day, or 5%. Nothing was reprinted. The destination and the footer text changed, and the same code kept working.

With one code per location you can also compare stores, and the hourly chart shows whether the lunch rush or the evening shift scans more. To follow visitors after the scan, add UTM parameters to the destination as described in QR code tracking in Google Analytics 4. For the basics of scan logging, see how a QR code tracker works.

Free plan or Pro: do the math on receipt volume

Receipts are a high-volume placement, so check the numbers before you roll out.

  • Free: unlimited dynamic codes, editable destinations, and the full analytics dashboard. Each code works for its first 50 scans and shows a brief QRelix screen before forwarding. After 50 scans the code pauses until you upgrade.
  • Pro ($5.99 per month): unlimited scans so codes never pause, no QRelix screen, and the security suite (password protection, expiration dates, geofencing).

At 150 receipts a day and a 2% scan rate, a code collects about 3 scans a day and reaches 50 scans in roughly 17 days. That is enough for a two-week pilot on one register to learn whether your customers scan at all. A code that lives on every receipt needs Pro. If a free code pauses, the code and its analytics stay in your account, and upgrading brings it back without changing the printed image. The full breakdown is in dynamic QR code cost.

Mistakes that kill receipt scans

  • Printing too small. Under 2 cm, phone cameras struggle, especially on curled paper.
  • Low print darkness. Faded thermal print lowers contrast. Thermal paper also fades with heat and light, so expect most scans within a day or two of the sale.
  • No call to action. Tell the customer what they get.
  • Linking to your homepage. Send people to the exact review form, survey, or signup page.
  • A page that is slow on phones. Every receipt scan happens on a phone.
  • Leaving an old offer live. When a promotion ends, change the destination the same day.

Common questions

Can I change the link without editing my receipt template?

Yes. Edit the destination in your QRelix dashboard and the next scan goes to the new page. The image in your POS stays the same.

Does every receipt get its own QR code?

No. You add one dynamic code to the template and it prints on every receipt. Codes that are unique to each transaction come from the POS system, and QRelix does not generate those.

Do customers need an app to scan it?

No. The camera app on current iPhones and Android phones reads QR codes.

Next steps

Create your receipt QR code and run it on one register for two weeks. If the scan rate justifies it, add a code per location and move to Pro before the first code reaches 50 scans. Related reading: QR codes for retail.
