Free QR Code That Doesn't Expire: How to Make One

5 min read

A free QR code that doesn't expire is a static code. The WiFi login, contact card, or message is stored in the pattern itself, so there is no account, link, or timer behind it that could be switched off. QRelix's free QR tools make static codes in your browser with no signup, and each one works for as long as the print survives. A code you want to edit or track later is dynamic, and you can create a dynamic QR code on QRelix with no credit card. Dynamic codes have no time limit on the free plan, but each one works for its first 50 scans and then pauses until you upgrade.

Do QR codes expire?

The printed pattern never does. A QR code is data in ink, and a phone will read it ten years from now as easily as today. What can stop working is the thing the code depends on, and that differs by type.

  • Static code. The content sits inside the pattern. Nothing can pause, lapse, or be cancelled. The only weak point is the content itself: a WiFi code stops connecting if you change the password, and a code holding a web address opens a dead page if that page is taken down.
  • Dynamic code. The pattern holds a short redirect link, and the service behind that link forwards each scan to your destination. That is what makes the code editable and trackable. It also means the code forwards only while its redirect is active.

So before you print, check which type you have and, for a dynamic code, what keeps its redirect running. The static vs. dynamic comparison covers the two types in more depth.

How to make a free QR code that doesn't expire

Use a static code when the content will not change. On QRelix that takes about a minute and no account:

  • Open the free QR tools and pick a type: WiFi, vCard contact card, email, SMS, phone number, plain text, WhatsApp chat, map location, calendar event, or Instagram profile.
  • Fill in the form. The code is generated in your browser as you type, and nothing you enter is uploaded.
  • Scan the preview with your phone to check it does what you expect.
  • Download a PNG for screens or an SVG for print.

That file is yours. It has no scan limit and no expiration date, and it keeps working whether or not you ever come back to QRelix. The trade-off is that it is fixed: a static code cannot be edited after download, and it does not count scans.

Here is a typical case. A cafe owner makes a code with the WiFi QR code generator and prints it on 20 table tents. Guests scan it a few hundred times a week for years, and there is nothing to renew. If she changes the WiFi password, the old code stops connecting, so she makes a new one and reprints. A contact card from the vCard QR code generator works the same way on a business card.

When you need a link, edits, or scan counts

Every code made in the QRelix creator is dynamic. That is the type for website links and files, and for any code where the destination might change or you want to know how often it gets scanned. Here is exactly how long a dynamic QRelix code works:

  • Free plan ($0, no credit card). There is no trial timer and the plan itself does not expire. You can make unlimited dynamic codes. Each code works for its first 50 scans and shows a brief QRelix screen before forwarding. After 50 scans it pauses until you upgrade. A paused code and its scan history are not deleted.
  • Pro ($5.99 per month). Scans are unlimited, so codes never pause, the QRelix screen is removed, and any paused codes are reactivated. The printed pattern stays the same, so nothing needs reprinting.
  • If you cancel Pro. Your codes stay in your account and follow the free rules again: the QRelix screen returns and codes pause after their first 50 scans.

The 50 scans are a total for each code, not a monthly allowance. The pricing page lists both plans, and the dynamic QR code cost guide works through which print jobs fit the free plan.

Static or dynamic: which one for your print job

  • A WiFi sign, a contact card, a phone number, a short note: static. The content rarely changes and there is nothing to measure.
  • 30 flyers or a one-day event with a link: dynamic on the free plan. It will probably stay under 50 scans, and you can fix the link if it changes.
  • A menu, packaging, a storefront sign, or anything with a link printed in the thousands: dynamic on Pro. It will pass 50 scans quickly, and you will want to change the destination without paying for a reprint.
  • Not sure how many scans to expect: start a dynamic code on the free plan, watch the count in the dashboard, and upgrade before it reaches 50.

If you are weighing a static code to avoid a subscription, price the reprint too. The hidden cost of reprinting QR codes runs those numbers.

What else can stop a QRelix code

Apart from the 50-scan pause on the free plan, a dynamic QRelix code stops forwarding only when you tell it to:

  • You disable it in the dashboard. Scanners see an inactive message until you enable it again.
  • You delete it. Deleting removes the code and its analytics permanently, so disable a code instead if you might reuse it.
  • You set an access rule on Pro: an expiration date, a daily or total scan limit, a password, or a geofence. Each rule can be changed or removed later without making a new code. The security and access controls guide explains each one.

The other thing to keep alive is the destination. If the page behind a code is removed, a static code is stuck with it, while a dynamic code can be pointed somewhere else in a few seconds.

Common questions

Do free QR codes expire?

Static ones do not. A free dynamic QRelix code has no time limit, but it pauses after its first 50 scans.

Can I make a QR code for a website link that never expires?

On QRelix, link codes are dynamic, so the answer depends on scans. Up to 50 scans, the free plan covers the code with no time limit. Beyond that it needs Pro at $5.99 a month, which keeps it scanning for as long as you subscribe. The free static tools cover WiFi, contacts, messages, and the other types listed above.

What does a scanner see when a free code pauses?

An upgrade prompt instead of your destination. Upgrading to Pro brings the same printed code back at once.

Does a static code work without internet?

Yes for WiFi, contact, and text codes, because the phone reads the content straight from the pattern. A dynamic code needs a connection at scan time, because it resolves through a link.

How do I make the print last as long as the code?

Keep a dark pattern on a light background, leave white space around it, print it at least 2 cm wide, and test the final artwork on both an iPhone and an Android phone before a full run.
