Edit a QR Code After Printing: How to Change the Link
You can edit a QR code after printing only if it is a dynamic code. A dynamic code holds a short redirect link, so you change where that link points and every printed copy follows. The pattern on the paper stays exactly the same. A static code has its content fixed in the pattern and cannot be edited, so the fix is a redirect on your own website or a reprint. Every code you create on QRelix is dynamic, and editing the destination is included on the free plan. Each free code works for its first 50 scans and shows a brief QRelix screen before forwarding.
Can you edit a QR code after printing?
It depends on which of the two types is on the paper.
- Dynamic code: yes. The pattern stores a short link, and the service behind that link forwards each scan to your destination. Change the destination in your account and the next scan goes to the new page. Nothing about the print changes.
- Static code: no. The pattern stores the content itself, whether that is a web address, a WiFi login, or a contact card. To change the content you would have to change the pattern, which means a new code and a new print.
In both cases the ink is fixed. Editing never alters the printed squares, the size, or the colors. What a dynamic code lets you change is what happens after the scan. The static vs. dynamic comparison explains the two types in more detail.
How to tell which type you printed
If you are not sure what you have, two checks settle it in a minute.
- Scan it and read the address. Your phone's camera shows a link before it opens. If that link is your final page address, the code is static. If it is a short link that then forwards to your page, the code is dynamic.
- Look for the code in an account. A dynamic code lives in a dashboard where it is listed with an edit option. If you only have an image file and no account anywhere, treat the code as static.
Codes that work with no internet connection, such as a WiFi login or a contact card stored in the pattern, are always static.
How to edit a dynamic QR code on QRelix
Changing where a printed code points takes four steps:
- Open your dashboard and select the QR code you want to change.
- Click Edit.
- Replace the URL, file, contact details, or other content the code holds.
- Click Save.
The change takes effect immediately, so the next person who scans the printed code sees the new content. You can update a code as many times as you like. After each edit, scan one printed copy yourself to confirm it opens the right page. The guide to managing your QR codes covers the dashboard in full.
A worked example: 2,000 flyers and an offer that ended
A gym prints 2,000 flyers in January with a QR code that opens its new-year offer page. In February the offer ends, but the flyers are still on noticeboards and in gym bags around town.
With a static code, every late scan lands on an expired offer, and fixing that means paying for the flyers twice. If the print run cost 12 cents a flyer, that is $240 to correct one link.
With a dynamic code, the owner opens the dashboard, clicks Edit, pastes the address of the spring trial page, and saves. The same flyers now open the current offer. The same fix works for a typo in the address spotted after the boxes are labeled, a menu that moved to a new page, or an event page that should switch to a recap once the event is over.
What to do if your printed code is static
A static code cannot be edited, but you still have options, in order of effort:
- Redirect the old address on your website. If the code points at a page on a domain you control, set up a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one. The code still opens the old address, and your site forwards the visitor. This works only for web links, and only while you keep the domain.
- Keep the old page alive. If you cannot redirect it, leave the page up with a clear link to the new one.
- Cover it. For a counter sign, a menu, or a few posters, print a sticker with a new dynamic code and place it over the old one.
- Reprint once, with a dynamic code. For a large run there may be no way around a reprint. Using a dynamic code this time means the next change is an edit. The cost of reprinting QR codes adds up quickly across a year of print.
Static codes for WiFi or contact details have no redirect option. Make a new one with the free QR tools and replace the print. Static codes still have a place when the content will never change, as covered in how to make a free QR code that doesn't expire.
What else you can change after printing
The destination is the main thing, but a dynamic code on QRelix gives you a few more controls that work on paper already in circulation:
- Turn the code off and on. Disable a code when a campaign ends and scanners see an inactive message. Enable it again later with one click. The code and its analytics stay in your dashboard.
- Rotate between several pages. Round Robin URLs send scans from one code to a list of pages in order, which is useful for testing two landing pages from the same flyer.
- Add access rules on Pro. Password protection, an expiration date, scan limits, and geofencing can be added or changed after the code is printed, and they take effect immediately. The security and access controls guide explains each one.
Design is the exception. If you change the colors or logo in your dashboard, new downloads use the new design, while anything already printed stays as it was printed.
Free plan limits to check before you print
Editing is not a paid feature on QRelix. The free plan needs no credit card and includes unlimited dynamic QR codes, editable destinations, custom colors and a logo, and scan analytics. The limits are on scans:
- Each free code works for its first 50 scans. After that it pauses until you upgrade.
- Each free scan shows a brief QRelix screen before forwarding to your page.
QRelix Pro is $5.99 per month. It makes scans unlimited so codes never pause, removes the QRelix screen, and adds the security suite: password protection, expiration dates, and geofencing. Upgrading does not change the QR image, so nothing needs reprinting. A code on 2,000 flyers will likely pass 50 scans, so plan on Pro for a print run of that size. The dynamic QR code cost guide walks through the numbers, and current details are on the pricing page.
Questions about editing printed QR codes
How many times can you change a dynamic QR code?
As many times as you like. There is no cap on edits, and each one applies from the next scan.
Does editing the link change the printed pattern?
No. The pattern holds the short redirect link, and that link stays the same. Only the page it forwards to changes, which is why paper you have already printed keeps working.
Can I turn a printed static code into a dynamic one?
Not the copies that are already printed, because their pattern is fixed. Create a dynamic code for the same destination and use it from the next print run onward.
Will I see how many people scan the code after I edit it?
Yes. Every QRelix code counts its scans, with time, location, and device for each one. See what a trackable QR code tells you and how dynamic QR code tracking works.
Make your next print editable
If a printed link might ever need to change, start with a dynamic code. Create a dynamic QR code on QRelix with no credit card, print it, and edit the destination whenever the page behind it moves.
