Custom Domains for QR Codes

Updated

A custom domain puts your own web address inside your QR codes. Instead of encoding a qrelix.com link, a code encodes a link on a domain you own, such as https://go.yourbrand.com/<code id>. Anyone who previews the link before opening it sees your brand, and the scan resolves on your domain with HTTPS.

Custom domains are part of the QRelix Team Plan ($19 a month or $190 a year, 3 seats included). They are not available on the Free or Pro plans.

What you get

  • Your domain in every link. New codes in the workspace can use your domain automatically, and you can move existing dynamic codes onto it.
  • Up to 3 domains per workspace. Use a subdomain like go.yourbrand.com or a dedicated apex domain like yourbrand.link.
  • Automatic HTTPS. QRelix issues and renews the certificate for you once DNS is in place.
  • Nothing else changes. Analytics, password protection, expiration dates, geofencing, scheduling, round robin URLs, and webhooks all work the same on a custom domain.
  • No QRelix branding. Team workspaces never show a QRelix screen on scans, so the whole path from scan to destination is yours.

Before you start

  • A QRelix Team workspace. Only workspace owners and admins can add or remove domains. Editors can choose which domain a code uses.
  • A domain you control and access to its DNS settings at your registrar or DNS provider (for example Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Namecheap, Squarespace, or Route 53).
  • A subdomain you are not using for anything else. A short one such as go., qr., or scan. works well on printed material.

Set up a custom domain

  1. In the dashboard, open Domains (/dashboard/domains).
  2. Click Add domain and enter the domain, for example go.yourbrand.com. Do not include https:// or a path.
  3. QRelix shows the DNS record to add. Copy it into your DNS provider exactly as shown.
  4. If QRelix also shows a TXT record, add that too. It appears when the domain is already connected somewhere else and proves that you own it.
  5. Back in QRelix, click Check DNS. When the record is found, QRelix verifies the domain and issues an HTTPS certificate automatically.
  6. Optionally set the domain as the workspace default and add a root redirect (both explained below).

Verification usually takes a few minutes. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to reach everywhere, so if the first check fails, wait a little and click Check DNS again. QRelix also checks pending domains once a day for two weeks, so a domain connects on its own once DNS catches up.

DNS records

Which record you add depends on whether you connect a subdomain or an apex (root) domain.

Domain type Example Record type Name / host Value
Subdomain go.yourbrand.com CNAME go cname.vercel-dns.com
Apex domain yourbrand.link A @ 76.76.21.21
Ownership (only when shown) either TXT as shown in QRelix as shown in QRelix

A subdomain on a domain you already use for your website is the most common setup, because it leaves your main site untouched. An apex domain makes sense when you buy a short domain just for links.

Always copy the values from the Domains page. If QRelix shows a different value from this table for your domain, use the one in the dashboard.

Verification and HTTPS

Each domain on the Domains page shows its status. A domain is ready once DNS is verified and the certificate is issued. You do not need to buy, upload, or renew a certificate: QRelix handles that automatically for as long as the DNS record points at QRelix.

Codes can only be moved onto a verified domain.

QRelix re-checks every connected domain once a day. If its DNS record stops pointing at QRelix, the domain shows DNS needs attention on the Domains page with the record to restore. Scans keep being served while that warning shows; fix the record and click Check DNS to clear it.

Choose a default domain

One verified domain can be the workspace default. Every new QR code created in the workspace then uses it automatically, whoever creates it. You can change the default or clear it at any time. Changing the default does not move existing codes.

Move an existing QR code to your domain

Any dynamic QR code can be switched to a custom domain, or back to qrelix.com, from the Scan link card on its Configure page. Pick the domain and click Change domain.

Switching the domain changes the link inside the code, so QRelix regenerates the QR image. Keep these points in mind:

  • Copies you already printed keep the old link. Download the new image and reprint wherever you want the custom domain to appear.
  • The old link keeps working. Old prints still resolve to the same destination, and their scans still appear in the same analytics. (A link on a custom domain keeps working for as long as that domain stays connected.)
  • The previous image is kept in the code's design history.
  • The code keeps its destination, settings, and scan history.

Static codes (such as static Wi-Fi codes) and other payloads that are not dynamic links do not use a domain, so the domain choice does not appear for them.

Root redirect

By default, someone who visits the bare domain, such as https://go.yourbrand.com/ with no code at the end, sees a plain not-found page. Add a root redirect on the Domains page to send those visitors to a URL you choose instead, such as your homepage.

If the Team plan ends or a domain is removed

  • The Team plan ends. Codes that use your custom domain keep working. Scans are forwarded through qrelix.com, so printed codes do not break.
  • You remove the domain from QRelix, or its DNS stops pointing at QRelix. Codes printed with that domain stop resolving, because the domain no longer reaches QRelix. Before you remove a domain, the dashboard shows how many codes use it. When you remove it, those codes are moved back to qrelix.com links and their images are regenerated, so download and reprint them.

Keep the DNS record in place for as long as codes printed with the domain are in use. Deleting the record or letting the domain expire breaks every one of those codes.

Troubleshooting

Check DNS keeps failing. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate. Confirm the record name and value match the Domains page exactly, with no extra spaces or trailing dots added by your provider, then try again later. A lookup tool such as dig go.yourbrand.com or an online DNS checker shows what the world currently sees.

I use Cloudflare. Set the record's proxy status to DNS only (grey cloud), not Proxied (orange cloud). A proxied record hides the real target, so verification and certificate issuance fail.

The domain verified but HTTPS does not work yet. Certificates usually arrive within minutes of verification. If your domain has CAA records, make sure they allow Let's Encrypt (0 issue "letsencrypt.org"), or the certificate cannot be issued.

An apex domain does not verify. Remove any other A or AAAA records on the same name. A leftover AAAA (IPv6) record from a parking page or old host sends some visitors elsewhere and can block verification. Keep only the A record to 76.76.21.21.

A subdomain does not verify. A name can only have one CNAME, and a CNAME cannot share its name with other records. Delete any existing A, AAAA, or CNAME record on that subdomain before adding the new one.

QRelix asks for a TXT record. The domain is already connected to another account or service. Add the TXT record exactly as shown to prove you own it, then click Check DNS again.

FAQ

Which plan includes custom domains? The QRelix Team Plan, at $19 a month or $190 a year with 3 seats included. Free and Pro do not include custom domains.

How many custom domains can I connect? Up to 3 per Team workspace.

Can I use my main domain, like yourbrand.com? Only if nothing else uses it, because the apex record must point at QRelix. Most teams use a subdomain such as go.yourbrand.com so their website stays where it is.

Do I need to reprint my existing QR codes? Only if you want them to show your domain. Existing codes keep working on qrelix.com. Switching a code to your domain regenerates its image, and only the new image carries the new link.

Does scan tracking still work? Yes. Scans on a custom domain appear in the same analytics, scan log, and webhooks as any other scan.

Do security rules work on a custom domain? Yes. Passwords, expiration dates, scan limits, geofences, and schedules apply exactly as they do on qrelix.com.

Who can manage domains? Owners and admins can add and remove domains and set the default. Editors can choose the domain for the codes they edit.

What happens to my codes if I cancel the Team plan? They keep working. Scans on your custom domain are forwarded through qrelix.com, as long as the DNS record still points at QRelix.
